I feel like this one isn’t getting the attention it deserves.
Starting in 2027, the B.C. Home Owner Grant is changing. For homeowners outside the Capital, Metro Vancouver and Fraser Valley regional districts, the regular Home Owner Grant will be reduced from $770 to $570, while the Senior/Additional Home Owner Grant will be reduced from $1,045 to $845.
On top of that, the Province is eliminating the $200 Northern and Rural Home Owner Benefit altogether. These changes take effect January 1, 2027.
For homeowners who currently rely on these programs, particularly seniors and those living on fixed incomes, these changes could have a meaningful impact on the cost of staying in their homes.
Combined with other recent changes to the property tax deferment program, I think this deserves more discussion than it has received.
I try to keep these articles light, informative and positive, but I’m struggling to find the silver lining in this one. For many British Columbians, particularly those on fixed incomes, this is a significant loss of support at a time when the cost of homeownership continues to rise.
A difficult change for B.C. homeowners, and certainly one worth paying attention to.
